Turn on Developer Mode

Since iOS 16, apps signed with a personal UDID certificate only open with Developer Mode on. How to turn it on, and why the option may be missing.

Updated 9 October 2026

Since iOS 16, apps signed with a development or ad-hoc certificate (most personal UDID certificates) only run when Developer Mode is on. Apps signed with an enterprise certificate don’t need it; for those, just trust the app.

  1. Open Privacy & Security

Open Settings and tap Privacy & Security. Scroll near the bottom of the list.

  2. Turn on Developer Mode

Tap Developer Mode, switch it on, then tap Restart.

  3. Confirm after the restart

After the iPhone restarts and you unlock it, a prompt asks whether to turn on Developer Mode. Tap Turn On and enter your passcode.

Can’t find “Developer Mode”?

The option only appears after a development-signed app has been installed. Install the app first, try to open it once, then go back to Privacy & Security.
